Muckle Roe felt a wild and remote place to visit. In good weather, we enjoyed exploring one of the beaches, which had quite reddish sand. The weather continued to be good as we walked more of the coast, & I decided to try a painting. My orientation was dictated by the need to have the back of the fisherman's tent to the steady Atlantic breeze, so that it could give shelter. The oil sketch shows the particular hue of the Muckle Roe rocks, which gave another chance for "Venetian Red" to be pressed into service! I added the gannets later. There had certainly been many of them about as I worked.
